Yesterday, I spoke in Parliament during a debate on the situation in Nepal.I paid tribute to the strength and generosity of the British-Nepali community, including the many people in Harrow with close links to Nepal.
My thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating floods and landslides, and with all those who have lost loved ones.
The support shown by our local community, particularly by businesses in South Harrow, is a powerful reminder of the enduring bonds between the UK and Nepal.
I also highlighted the growing threat posed by climate change. Rising temperatures are contributing to glacier retreat and permafrost thaw, increasing the risks of landslides and other hazards for Nepal’s mountain communities.
As Nepal’s Prime Minister has made clear, tackling climate change and supporting communities affected by these disasters must be a priority. The UK must stand alongside Nepal as it responds to this tragedy and supports its people to recover and rebuild.
