South Harrow Station One Step Closer to Step-Free Access
South Harrow Station has been shortlisted as one of just 15 stations across the country being considered for step-free access – bringing long-awaited accessibility improvements a step closer for local residents.
The news follows a long-running campaign led by Gareth Thomas MP and local residents, including South Harrow’s Majib, whose efforts alongside Gareth’s work experience team last summer helped gather thousands of petition signatures calling for accessibility improvements.
For too long, the steep steps at South Harrow Station have posed barriers to wheelchair users, parents with prams, and older residents, preventing many from travelling independently. With brand-new Piccadilly Line trains now being tested in Ruislip, campaigners say this is the ideal moment to ensure everyone can benefit from a truly inclusive transport network.
Gareth Thomas MP, Member of Parliament for Harrow West, said:
“This is fantastic news – South Harrow has made the shortlist, and we’re one step closer to making step-free access a reality.
Many will remember last summer when my work experience team joined Majib in collecting thousands of signatures. Majib made clear just how life-changing step-free access would be – just as it has been at Sudbury Hill, Harrow-on-the-Hill, and Northolt.
For too long, the steep steps at South Harrow have excluded wheelchair users, parents with prams, and many older residents. With new Piccadilly Line trains being tested nearby, now is the time to ensure everyone can benefit from a truly accessible transport network.”
The campaign continues to gather support from residents across Harrow, and Gareth is urging anyone who hasn’t yet done so to sign the petition and show their backing for step-free access at South Harrow Station.
